You will be welcomed to Ottumwa First United Methodist Church. The greeter can assist you in finding your way around the building. You will be given a bulletin that details the order of the morning’s worship service.
Is there coffee?
We have a time of fellowship from 10:00 to 10:25 on Sunday mornings. Coffee and refreshments are served. Stop by Fellowship Hall on the lower level before heading the the sanctuary for the worship service.
What about the kids?
Children are always welcome in worship, no matter what the age. There is a nursery available. An usher can help direct you to the nursery or provide you with some quiet activity pages for use during the worship service. Children will be invited to come forward for the children's message. We are a certified "Safe Sanctuary" church.
Where should I sit?
Sit anywhere you would like. Let the usher know if you would like to sit with a regular attendee so that he/she might guide you through the service and answer your questions.
What type of worship service should I expect?
Our worship service is considered traditional with a casual feel. We connect and praise God with established hymns and some newer praise songs. There are moments of tribute and also quiet reflection. Often there are flashes of laughter as we are challenged to learn the teachings of the day.
We do not draw attention to our guests during the service by asking them to stand up. We feel it is important for people to meet others at their own pace.
What does it mean to "Share Christ's Peace"?
This is a moment in the worship service when we get out of the seats and greet those around us. It follows Christ’s example. Watch the short video from Chuck Knows Church to understand the background of this practice.Peace be with you.
What should I do when the offering plate is passed to me?
We will pass plates to collect offerings for the ongoing expenses and ministries of the church. As our guest, you are not expected to make a donation. If you have filled out one of the "Connect" slips, you can place that in the plate as it is passed.
Should I take communion?
The United Methodist Church practices open Communion. This means that the table is Christ’s table and is open to all persons regardless of religious affiliation or age. Whether you should receive Communion with us is between you and God. The ushers will direct people to the front. Simply remain seated while the others go forward if you choose not to partake.
Communion is usually served on the first Sunday of the month. We take Communion by intinction, which means we take a piece of bread, dip it into the cup of grape juice, then consume the elements together. You may spend time kneeling or standing at the rail before returning to your seat.
Watch the short video from Chuck Knows Church to learn more about Communion.
What should I do when the worship service is over?
The worship service has ended once the benediction is given. Some may choose to pause and listen to the postlude music being played. This is also a time of informal greetings and conversation. The pastor can be found at the back of the sanctuary and is available to greet and visit following the service. Our building can be confusing. Please let us know if you would like help finding the exit that fits your needs.
What does "The Church that Leaves the Building" mean?
The meaning of “church” is not that of a building, but of people. Church is more than a Sunday morning activity. Church is the life of Jesus on display through His people. We are called to reach outward into our community and beyond every day of the week.
